Contributor Kim Kerr visited the beautiful university city of Athens for a luxury break and fell in love with the exquisite ATHBNB The Rushmore, the newest boutique B&B in Georgia
If you’ve never before considered a stay at a Georgia bed and breakfast, it’s maybe time you did. Choose wisely, and you’ll find yourself staying in rooms every bit as classy as a boutique hotel, but often with a great deal more charm, comfort, and yes, even luxury.
Such is definitely the case with ATHBNB The Rushmore. This sumptuous new Athens bed and breakfast is wowing guests with its unique design and décor, while at the same time upping the stakes for its competitors in the “best places to stay” category.
One of Georgia’s newest and best boutique B&Bs, ATHBNB The Rushmore is the brainchild of Candice and Cameron Treadway, a pair of University of Georgia graduates who stepped up and breathed new life into this former frat house that had, before they took over, seen better days.
ATHBNB The Rushmore: Not Your Nana’s B&B
Built in 1918 and located in Athens’ posh Five Points neighborhood, The Rushmore’s yellow-brick exterior is certainly pleasing to the eye and certainly doesn’t look out of place among the many other large old homes that line South Milledge Avenue. But it’s the B&B’s interior, however, that has really been grabbing attention.
Entering through the keyless, mobile-phone-friendly garden-level entrance adjacent to the ample car park, the wow factor is very much evident from the get-go. You’ll first see “The Commons” which, as its name suggests, is a fun space for guests to congregate for a chat, listen to music, share a drink, catch up with some work (high-speed wi-fi is included), or watch a movie.
Not that this is a noisy spot. Quite the opposite. Our suite, the “Lenox,” was located next to the entrance and common area, yet the interior and exterior walls were so solid we never heard a whisper, even from passing traffic.
The suite’s décor was extremely pleasing, boasting a lovely grey and black floral motif that was matched by the copious cushions on the bed. And with a comfortable chair in which to relax, not to mention the complimentary macaroons, a selection of tea, and plenty of reading material, you’ll not want to leave your room. A handy fridge and free bottled water are also provided.
Other highlights include the gorgeous linens from Peacock Alley, along with a huge bathroom, all of it tiled, with a spacious walk-in glass shower. Plush bathrobes, comfy slippers, and great Grown Alchemist bath products are also provided for you to pamper yourself.
Better by Design @ ATHBNB The Rushmore
As tempting as it may be, don’t just stay in your room The aesthetics and core design of this fabulous Georgia B&B has many other pleasing qualities that can be seen across each of its three levels, all of them akin to the features of an upscale boutique hotel.
No two rooms are designed the same, with each boasting unique flourishes that definitely leave you wishing you could stay long enough to sample them all. The balance of bold colors, patterns, shapes, and scale is extremely pleasing to the eye in every room.
The main level features another two magnificent guest spaces. The art deco styling and exquisite craftsmanship of the elegant dining room will make you want to linger long after those evening drinks and snacks are done.
Enjoy a Breakfast of Champions
And the adjoining “Club Room,” a living room-like area with comfy couches and chairs and more of that quirky artwork, is where breakfast is served. And to start the day, delicious early morning mimosas, are a refreshing way to kick-start your day, especially when followed by the superb breakfasts provided by Five Points’ very own Café on Lumpkin.
Made with local products, breakfast staples change every day and are always healthy and yummy and served with fresh ground coffee. For us, it was homemade granola with yogurt, eggs and bacon, bagels and cream cheese, and delicious fresh baked lemon loaf and muffins. For those needing a bite later in the day or something to go, a variety of fruit and other snacks are also available for a fee.
Come time to leave, we simply didn’t want to go, so enamored were we by this classy B&B’s glamorous design and pleasing yet functional styling. So, making the most of our time, we lingered just a little longer on the patio out front as we contemplated our very memorable stay in what truly must be one of the best luxury B&Bs in Georgia.
